Bay Area Managers Are Amateurs

  • Rating: No Rating
Is there such a thing as a good Bay Area Hip-Hop manager? Seriously. I mean, when is the last time you heard of a Bay Area Hip-Hop artist making it big except for E-40, Keak da Sneak maybe, but he still doesn't get the attention he deserves.

There is so much talent in the Bay Area. We have lyrical geniuses, the best beat makers, women that are second to none and fans that support local hip-hop artists. Is there such a thing as a good Bay Area Hip-Hop manager? I honestly don't know, but I hope so. Ballers, ask yourself this, what major label actually owns your so called Independent Label?

As the title says, "Bay Area Managers Are Amateurs." Please, show me one that's not. Please prove me wrong. I love Bay Area Hip-Hop, I'm just sick and tired of our artists not blowing up.

Example 1: Mistah FAB

To be honest, I don't know Mistah Fab's manager and never worked with him/her, but Mistah FAB is special. He's proven himself to the people of the Bay Area countless times on his mixtapes, albums and singles and has proven that he can crossover into all genres of Hip-Hop, but yet remains what I call, a regional artist.

Do you ever wonder why he remains a regional artist? If you don't know, I'll tell you. I searched for Mistah FAB on google and the third result was MistahFAB.com. Here's the screenshot of MistahFAB.com.

Mistah FAB's Current Website Is Not an Interactive Website

With that said, I then looked up who managed his domain name and/or website and I found out that Straight Hits Entertainment actually owns his name. I thought to myself, if Mistah FAB doesn't have a site, surely his record label would have a site that generates traffic and revenue for its artists. I was wrong. Take a look at the screenshot below.

Mistah FAB's Label Does Not Have an Internet Presence

No internet presence = no traffic = no downloads = no money

Bay Area Artists are already supported by local fans, to make money they need to expand their fan base in other regions. (just curious, but isn't that one of the reasons for a website - to capture and acquire additional fans from all over the world)

So here we are.

Mistah FAB just released "Hyphy Ain't Dead" for only $5.99 on itunes. To be honest, its refreshing to hear Mistah FAB kill it on so many tracks. It reminds me of the days when Bay Area artists were being played around the world, but at the same time, it frustrates me. It frustrates me that no one around him is furthering his development as an artist and businessman.

If you disagree with what I said, please take a close look at the screenshots above or simply search for Mistah FAB on itunes and/or Amazon. What do you get? On itunes you get three different spellings of his name, Mistah FAB, Mistah F.A.B and Mistah fab, all with different results.

Lastly, click on Mistah FAB's bio in itunes and read it. It's definitely outdated and doesn't exactly entice the customer to purchase his music. So what do Bay Area managers do? Your guess is as good as mine.

i feel you on some parts of that but sometimes its the artist who slacks on the promotions of his or her own career plus thats what myspace is for bra. and not only that but a lot of people like stayin underground like mac dre was everybody knew him but when your signed onto a label you gotta switch up your style when you go mainstream because they wanna make hella videos and club hits because a lot of people from out here is on that kill a nigga pimp a bitch type shit and thats not what plays in the clubs and if you dont sell good theyll drop your ass like a hot potato lol

man you are so right. i used to be a manager. alot of it has to do with the artists as well.
but out here managers really either 1. expect you to pay them for nothing or 2. they dont understand what a real artist actually does. im differtn im a pop artist so i allways find ppl into the hip hop and rock thing which is a home for hip hop rap and metal (oakland) but im glad you posted this maybe it will kick some ass and wake serious managers in the bay area up. your so right. i love mistah fab but somebody isnt doing somehting right mistah fab is well passed this level but to look him up on the net he looks like an amature artist and we all know he's not.
someimtes it seems like ppl are just lazy. if i could meet a manager that was gonna take me to the next level and make some money w/o bullshitting me then i will come back and correct you. but sadly your right and it will remain :)

Wzup! I work with Golddigga Ent, and Diva TV...and I thought I would reply to this commentary. He is right, there are no bay area managers that are legit, they either want your money or they want to use your resources to upgrade their credibility. This is why we gathered a team and started Golddigga Ent, to create mangement around our own artists and create possibilities instead of dealing with these amateur managers!

I feel where every body is coming from. But at the same time there is a lot of player hating going on as well. Is it me or for some reason how come bay area music only goes as far as texas? When you leave Cali a lot of states dont even play our shit! They look at our music as if it was a game a big joke! But none the less managers need to step their game up and become more businees wise! We started Rap music slange ETC! MANAGERS AND ARTIST MUST STEP THERE GAME UP! TIRED OF THA BAY GETING STEPED ON YAAA MEEE!!

Ok Ok Relax...your not saying anything we don't already know. But peep! How can Bay area artist get the pub when our own Radio Stations DON'T PLAY US. The largest Hip Hop urban radio station would be KMEL. Ok so if your an artist you already know that WE aren't being played out here. You used Mr. Fab as an example, but I gotta beg to differ on a few things. While Mr. Fab isn't Stainkin RICH like he should be...He is paid trust that. But like most artist out here he was skilled enough to travel to the East Coast and win Major battles and get the pub/buzz to work his music in.

Name me some label in CA that's signing artist right now and i'll send you a dozen press kits. It seems like its pay to play out here while good west coast music suffers from lack of budgets, there's no Financial help. I mean who really buys Cd's anymore, even the major cats aren't doing really well. Itunes and the digital age has taken over so, selling your ish on Itunes for 5.99 is probably goin right to Fab's pocket instead of some other rich white guy. You really have to look at it from all angles! Lots of West Coast artist's aren't collabin! You see the east coast and down south cats support each other where as out here its hard to get someone big on a great song let alone ur entire album without paying an arm and a leg. its should be just the other way around, cats should just get on great songs, get that show money and keep things rollin. Ask yourself what would have happend if the guy to took Notorious BIG's demo to Diddy wanted BIG to cash out first!!!!

We have to support our own! Just like how KMEL plays people from other cities and states Way before they will play some local slap! Mind Boguling isn't it. Next time u listen to Bay Area Radio station pay attention of how many Bay Artist's are being played then ask yourself how many artist's do u know in the Bay Area, then ask yourself which one of those arist's have Songs that should be on there! Till Big Von moves out the way i dunno, we gotta stay beatin up the streets with the music till its undenyable

Keldamuzik sent me an message on Hyphy.com. (Keldamuzik, please let me know if you're not all right with me posting this and I'll take it down)

Keldamuzik said, "With your message, Bay Area Managers are Amatuers. No one around here can't really pull strings or know how to manage an artist, all they say is "we can consult you for this price", because they know they can't handle the position of managing someone."

www.myspace.com/keldamuzik1

Here is my response to Keldamuzik,

I agree with you. The thing is, artists have to know what to look out for. It's been written, spoken and documented that bay area mangers are amateurs. I'm not a manager nor do I plan to become one, but please feel free to ask any and all questions.

I'm usually on Streetball.com, but nonetheless, really want to help hip-hop in the bay area. It seems as though nobody is helping out hip-hop in the Bay. The people already on top of the game seem to perpetuate its amateur status.

If ever you or your friends want to know what's up with Hip-Hop contracts, digital rights, websites, downloads, cd sales and agreements/partnerships, hit me up and I'll try to help out as best I can.

Lastly, you should check references on your manager. Ask them for at least one client they currently manage and also ask for at least one client they previously managed. Call them both, you'll find out all you need to know, one artist to another.

Thanks for being down with Hyphy.com, we need people like you.
Ryan
